  • SIR PHILLIP ANTHONY HOPKINS CBE - Welsh actor (December 31st 1937) most famous for his role as Dr Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs. He has one daughter Abigail Hopkins from whom he is estranged.

  • SAMUEL LEROY JACKSON - American actor (December 21st 1948) and star of movies such as Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Snakes on a Plane. He has one daughter Zoe with his wife LaTanya Richardson.

  • TOMMY LEE JONES - American actor and director (September 15th 1946) of films such as The Fugitive, No Country for Old Men and Batman Forever. Born in Texas his father worked on an oil field and his mother was a beautician and police officer. They married and divorced twice.

  • ALICIA KEYS - American singer, songwriter and actress, Alicia Augello Cook (January 25th 1981) was born in New York City. Her parents separated when she was two and her mother sent her to music and dance classes throughout her childhood.

  • LENNY KRAVITZ - American rock singer and actor (May 26th 1964) – he plays the role of Cinna in the Hunger Games Trilogy, he was born in New York City. He is the only child of Roxie Roker, an actress and Sly Kravitz an NBC television news producer. He also has one child – Zoë.

  • DIANE LANE - American actress (January 22nd 1965) of films such as The Perfect Storm and Under the Tuscan Sun)who is the only child of a nightclub singer and Playboy centrefold (Colleen Leigh Farrington) and a drama coach, cab driver and teacher (Burton Lane). She also has one daughter Eleanor Jasmine with ex-husband Christopher Lambert.

  • JOHN LENNON - Singer and founder of The Beatles, the most successful band in the history of music, John Winston Ono Lennon MBE was born in Liverpool (October 9th 1940) and went to live with his aunt Mimi and her husband George Smith (they had no children of their own) after they called social services on his mother. He was shot and killed by a deranged fan in 1980 at the age of just 40.

  • LEA MICHELE - American actress (August 29th 1986) and star of Glee, Lea Michele Sarfati was born in The Bronx, New York, the only child of Edith, a retired nurse and Mark, a real estate agent.

  • AL PACINO - American actor (April 25th 1940) most famous for playing the role of Michael Corleone in The Godfather films, Alfredo James 'Al' Pacino was born in East Harlem, New York City. His parents Salvatore Pacino and Rose divorced when he was two.

  • GREGORY PECK - American actor (April 5th 1916) and star of movies such as To Kill a Mockingbird, he was born Eldred Gregory Peck in La Jolla, California. His parents divorced when he was five.

  • MATTHEW PERRY - Canadian-American actor (August 19th 1969) most famous for his role as Chandler Bing in sitcom Friends. His parents divorced before his first birthday.

  • COLE PORTER - American composer and songwriter (June 9th 1891) born to a wealthy family in Indiana. He was the only child of Kate Cole and Samuel Porter. He penned hits such as ‘I get a Kick Out of You’ and ‘I’ve Got You Under My Skin.’

  • NATALIE PORTMAN - American actress (June 9th 1981) and star of the Star Wars prequel triology , V for Vendetta, Thor and Black Swan. She was born Natalie Hershlag in Jerusalem, Israel to an American mother (Shelley) who works as her agent and her father Avner, a fertility specialist. In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Natalie Portman once said: "I would never have been an actress if I weren't an only child, because my parents would never have let me be the star of the family at the expense of another child."

  • ELVIS PRESLEY - American singer and actor (January 8th 1935) nicknamed The King, he was the only child of Vernon Elvis Presley and Gladys Love. His identical twin brother Jesse Garon was stillborn 35 minutes before him. He had one daughter Lisa Marie Presley.

  • LISA MARIE PRESLEY - American singer-songwriter (February 1st 1968) and the only child of Elvis Presley and Priscilla (although Priscilla has a son from another relationship). She now lives in England.

  • CONDOLEEZA RICE - American politician (November 14th 1954) who was the 66nd United States Secretary of State. She was born in Birmingham, Alabama, the only child of Angelina (a music, science and oratory teacher) and John, a guidance counsellor and minister. She started to learn French, ballet, ice skating and music at the age of three and is a gifted pianist.

  • LEANN RIMES - American country and pop singer (August 28th 1982), Margaret LeAnn Rimes has sold over 37 million records worldwide. She is the only child of Wilbur Rimes and Belinda Butler.

  • RICHIE SAMBORA - American rock guitarist (July 11th 1959) of band Bon Jovi, Richard Stephen 'Ritchie' is the only child of Joan, a secretary and Adam, a factory foreman. He has one daughter Ava with ex-wife Heather Locklear.

  • JEAN PAUL SARTRE - French philosopher and playwright (June 21st 1905) who was born in Paris and the only child of Jean-Baptiste, an officer of the French Navy who died when he was two and Anne-Marie.

  • MARIA SHAPAROVA - Russian professional tennis player (April 19th 1987) born to Yuri and Elena who became the world number one for the first time on August 22nd 2005.

  • FRANK SINATRA - American singer and film actor (December 12th 1915) who was the only child of Italian immigrants Natalina Garaventa (who ran an illegal abortion service at home for free) and Antonio Martino Sinatra.

  • FRANKLIN D ROOSEVELT - The 32nd President of the United States (January 30th 1882) was born into one of the oldest families in New York State to James Roosevelt and Sara Ann Delano.

  • RINGO STARR - English musician and drummer of The Beatles (July 7th 1940), Richard Starkey MBE was born to Elsie and Richard who had divorced by the time he was five.

  • DANIELLE STEELE - American novelist (August 14th 1967) and the best-selling author alive, Danielle Fernandes Dominque Schuelein-Steelis is the only child of Norma da Câmara Stone dos Reis and John Schulein-Steel. Her parents divorced when she was eight.

  • CHARLIZE THERON - South African-American (August 7th 1975) Oscar winning actress (for Monster) and model, she was born in South Africa to Gerda and Charles Theron. On June 21st 1999 her alcoholic father attacked her mother and threatened them both which resulted in Gerda shooting and killing him. Charlize has one adopted son Jackson whom she adopted in 2012.

  • TIGER WOODS - American professional golfer (December 30th 1975), Eldrick Tont 'Tiger' Woods is the only child of Earl and Kultida Woods. He has two much older half-brothers from his father’s first marriage.

  • TIPPER GORE – Author, photographer and former second lady of the United States (she is currently separated from Al Gore). Born in Washington DC (August 19th 1948), Mary Elizabeth 'Tipper' Gore is the daughter of a plumbing-supply entrepreneur John and his first wife Margaret who later divorced.

  • SELENA GOMEZ – American actress and singer (July 22nd 1992) and star of many Disney Channel series such as Wizards of Waverly Place. She was born in Texas to her then 16 year old mother but her parents divorced when she was five. Her mother has now remarried and had another daughter in 2013 though Gomez was raised as an only child.

  • RUDOLPH GIULIANI – Former mayor of New York City (May 28th 1944) from 1994-2001 who was the only child of first-generation Americans who were children of Italian immigrants. He is also a lawyer and businessman.

  • SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR – American actress and producer (April 14th 1977) who starred in Buffy the Vampire Slayer along with Scooby-Doo, Cruel Intentions and I Know What You Did Last Summer. She was born in New York to a garment worker and nursery school teacher but her parents divorced when she was seven.

  • INDIRA GANDHI – The fourth Prime Minister of India (November 19th 1917) who was assassinated on October 31st 1984 in New Delhi. She was the only child of the first Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru. She had a younger brother but he died very young and her mother died an early death from TB.

  • E.M.FORSTER – English novelist (January 1st 1879, in foreground of photo) who wrote works such as Room with a View, A Passage to India, Howards End and Where Angels Fear to Tread, Edward Morgan Forster was born in London and was the only child of Alice Clara ‘Lily’ and Edward Morgan. He was officially registered as Henry Morgan but at his baptism was accidentally named as Edward Morgan. His father died of TB before he even reached his second birthday.

  • NICK FALDO – Professional English golfer (July 18th 1957), Sir Nicholas Alexander Faldo MBE was working as a carpet fitter until he turned professional in 1976.

  • LEONARDO DiCAPRIO – American actor and film producer (November 11th 1974) born in Los Angeles, California and the only child of Irmelin (his mother was born in Germany) and George, an underground comic artist. He was named Leonardo because his mother was looking at a painting by Leonardi di Vinci when he first kicked. His parents divorced when he was one.

  • ROBERT De NIRO – American actor (August 17th 1943) famous for many roles including his parts in Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfella’s, Meet the Parents and Analyze This. De Niro was born in New York and his mother Virginia was a painter and poet and his father (Robert De Niro Sr) a painter and sculptor. They divorced when he was three.

  • SAMMY DAVIS Jr – American dancer, singer and actor (December 8th 1925) of film’s such as Ocean’s 11, the first rat pack film, Samuel George 'Sammy' David Jr died of throat cancer in 1990.

  • DAVID COPPERFIELD – The most successful magician in history, Copperfield (September 16th 1956) is an American illusionist and the winner of 21 Emmy Awards.

  • LAURA BUSH – First Lady of the United States (November 4th 1946) and wife of George W.Bush.

  • PIERCE BROSNAN – Irish actor and film producer (May 16th 1963) of hits such as Mrs Doubtfire, The Thomas Crown Affair and Mamma Mia! He also played James Bond four times.

  • CANDICE BERGEN – American actress (May 9th 1946) who has one daughter Chloe Malle. She has played many roles including Carrie Bradshaw’s editor at Vogue and the pageant host in Miss Congeniality.

  • KATE BECKINSALE – Kathrin Romary Beckinsale (26th July 1973) is an English actress and star of films such as Pearl Harbour. She has a daughter Lily Mo Sheen (born in 1999) with actor Michael Sheen but is now married to Len Wiseman.

  • IRELAND BALDWIN – 6ft 2” American model (October 23rd 1995) who is the daughter of Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin.

  • BURT BACHARACH – American singer (May 12th 1928) and six-time Grammy Award and three-time Academy Award winner of hits such as Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head.

  • LAUREN BACALL – American model, stage and film actress (September 16th 1924), Betty Joan Perske starred in many movies (especially Bogart ones) including To Have and Not Have and The Big Sleep as well as How to Marry a Millionaire.

  • LANCE ARMSTRONG – Disgraced American cyclist (September 18th 1971) who won the Tour de France a record consecutive seven times (1999-2005) before being disqualified due to drug use.

  • CHRISTINA APPLEGATE – American actress (November 2th 1971) of hit films such as Anchor Man and Anchor Man 2 Christina has one daughter Sadie Grace born in January 2011 with second husband Martyn LeNoble.

  • JUSTIN BIEBER - Canadian singer Bieber (March 1st 1994) is latterly a bit of a hell-raiser born in London, Ontario. He is the only child of Jeremy Jack Bieber and Patricia 'Pattie' Mallette.

  • JESSIE BURTON - English author (born 1982) and winner of the Waterstone's Book of the Year 2014, The Miniaturist is a novel set in 17th Century Amsterdam. She is an only child and was raised in London.

  • KATE BOSWORTH – American actress Catherine ‘Kate’ (January 2nd 1983) is the only daughter of Patricia (a housewife) and Harold, who worked at Talbots, an American female fashion retailer. She also famously has a hazel right eye and a left blue one.

  • JOHN CLEESE – English actor (October 27th 1939) and star of Monty Python, Life of Brian, Fawlty Towers and Clockwise he is the only child of Muriel and Reginald Cleese, who changed their surname from Cheese when he enlisted for WW1 as he thought it was embarrassing.

  • CARY GRANT – Archibald Alexander Leach was an English stage and Hollywood film actor (January 18th 1904) who was named the second Greatest Male Star of All Time (after Humphrey Bogart). Star of films such as To Catch a Thief and An affair to Remember, he was born in Bristol, England and the only surviving child of his parents. His father had his mother placed in a mental institution when Grant was nine and went on to remarry, effectively deserting his son. He has one daughter – Jennifer Grant.

  • TERI HATCHER – American actress (December 8th 1964) best known for her roles as Susan Mayer on Desperate Housewives and Lois Lane in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. She was born to working parents Esther, a computer programmer and Owen, a nuclear physicist with both parents out of the home by the time she was six weeks old.

  • THERESA MAY – English MP (October 1st 1956) who is the only child of a Sussex Anglican minister and his wife Zaidee. May is the current UK Home Secretary. She is married with no children.

  • DAVINA McCALL – English TV presenter (October 16th 1967) most famously of Big Brother (2000-2010) McCall was the only child of a French mother, Florence, and an English father Andrew. She was brought up by her paternal grandparents after the breakdown of her parents’ marriage when she was three.

  • ROSAMUND PIKE – British actress (January 27th 1979) who played Bond girl Miranda Frost in Die Another Day, her first major movie and most recently played the role of Amy in Gone Girl. She is the only child of opera singers Caroline and Julian Pike.

  • DANIEL RADCLIFFE – English actor (July 23rd 1989) and star of the Harry Potter series (as the leading role) was born in London, the only child of Alan, a literary agent and Marcia, a casting agent.

  • KIERNAN SHIPKA – American actress (November 10th 1999) who played Sally Draper in Mad Men and named one of The 25 Most influential Teens of 2014 by Time Magazine
